Conference Opener - Dr Brian Iddon MP

Brian Iddon MP Picture

Born in Tarleton, Lancashire, Brian graduated as a chemist at the University of Hull (B.Sc. 1961; Ph.D. 1964).  He joined the staff at Durham University and in 1966, was appointed to the University of Salford. Brian has received the Degree of D.Sc. from the University of Hull and a number of awards, including an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Bolton, Honorary Membership of The Society of Chemical Industry and the President's Award from The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dr Iddon has served as a Councillor on Bolton MBC (Chairman of the Housing Committee, 1986 to 1996) for 21 years.   Bolton elected him an Honorary Alderman for his services to the town in 1998. He was elected to Parliament in 1997 and re-elected in 2001 and 2005.

Brian's interests in Parliament lie in the Education, Health and Social Security and Science and Technology policy areas. He is a Member of the Science and Technology Select Committee. His interests include controlled and other drugs, euthanasia, legislation on vitamins, minerals and herbal substances, and the politics of the Middle East and Kashmir. He holds offices in several All-Party Parliamentary Groups.
